Corona virus by David Disbury

I

Inspired by conversation and Facebook post.

He’s a key worker. He’s scared
but he’s here.
He knows there’s a virus!
People have died!
He sits on his bed. All kinds
Of thoughts are in his head.
He’s scared! People don’t care.
They don’t know he’s there.
Why should they care?
He’s a key worker!
He’s scared but he’s here.

II

Worrying that the symptoms will soon be
Showing, especially as he’s coughing.
The sanitiser makes his hands dry. But he
tries to keep his hands clean.
And to clean surfaces
so the signs don’t surface.
He’s scared but He’s there.

III

A man plods past, moaning,
The pubs are closing. Closing to
protect him from Covid … and hating
the changes that’re happening. Like
social separating. He man’s moaning
while he’s worrying that the symptoms,
will soon be showing,

IV

The man whines because shelves
are empty … nothing to feed the kids.
And snaps at him because he can’t
sell him four tins of beans and spaghetti.
He’s been told, only so many tins can be sold.
He’s a key worker and He’s scared but He’s here.

V

As the man pays his hands touch his money.
He’s scared! A month before it wouldn’t
affect him but now … and the sanitiser
makes his hands dry. The man’s paid,
he leaves but before he can put
on some gloves he gets, ‘hi three bags please.’
He’s a key worker. He’s scared but He’s here.
