Jess Wilbin “Protecting Animals” Litter Pick Sutherland Grange 17th July 2021

I love it when young people have an initiative and take action to help others. Jess wanted to protect the animals down Sutherland Grange and so put the word out on Facebook that she was going to do a litter pick on 17th July and if anyone wanted to join in to meet at 11am.

I got tagged on FB and asked if she needed any help. “Could do with some pickers” she said, so I contacted the relevant officer and he arranged to drop them off.  Another officer sorted out collecting the bags of litter in the afternoon. Thank you to both.

I then thought, hang on, don’t want them pesky DECOs jumping out from behind a bush and fining Jess and her gang of volunteers (14) for doing a good deed! So I contacted the relevant officer and in asking them to stand down from Sutherland Grange, they stepped up and offered to help 😉 The featured image above shows two of our District Enforcement Crime Officers, Mark & Ronit, helping with the litter pic… Thank you guys.

If you have an idea of how you might like to help in the community then feel free to email me and I can see how I can help. Thank you.

I asked Jess if she had anything else she’d like to say:

Before I make this about why I had this idea, I would like to show a huge appreciation to those who came out to join me. I couldn’t have done it without you guys and it meant a lot to me that so many care about this cause and about protecting biodiversity in our local environment.

I had this idea back in March but, like everything, due to Covid, I was unable to go through with my plans. However, as restrictions lift, it became possible and so I organised via the windsor Facebook group a collection of people. I was drawn to the attention of some local councillors who were so kind as to organise some litter pickers, gloves, hi-viz and collection of the litter we had found.

I had gone out the previous Thursday to scope the realms so to speak and found a whole bin bag full so I had no doubt with a team of us we would find plenty.

At the end of the day, this is about protecting our doggies and other wildlife – ducks, insects etc – and making sure there is nothing that is going to harm them. That is who I did this for. No other motives – pure love for animals and their habitats.

– Jess Wiblin

Thank you Jess

  1. When you do another litter pick it would be a good idea if we were invited back to Woodys to share our ideas and have a chat over a coffee.
