The Household Cavalry will be exercising their right to a Freedom of Entry March through Windsor on Saturday 18 May 2019. This will be a “goodbye” to Windsor as the Household Cavalry, which have been based at Combermere Barracks for over 200 years, will be relocating to Salisbury Plain later this year. This move is part of a major restructure and modernisation of the British Army which will see a number of regiments move from their current homes and relocate to Salisbury Plain, Aldershot and Catterick to form new strike and specialist infantry units based around the new Ajax armoured vehicle (which is not suitable for Combermere Barracks).
The Household Calvary riding school at Combermere Barracks is remaining so there will still be a small Household Cavalry presence at the Barracks. The Barracks will still be used as the base for any mounted elements associated with State/Ceremonial occasions. The Welsh Guards will occupy the Barracks following the departure of the Household Cavalry regiment.
The parade which will include up to 250 marching troops, 8 mounted troops as well as the Band of the Blues and Royals will leave Combermere Barracks just after 2.30pm and will march up the Long Walk, and along Park Street, St Albans Street and Castle Hill before pausing at the Guildhall where the Salute will be taken by HRH The Princess Royal, accompanied by the Mayor.
HRH The Princess Royal will make a short address before the troops continue their march back to Combermere Barracks. Following the Parade, HRH The Princess Royal and a number of Officers from the Regiment have been invited to join the Mayor and Members of the Council for a small Civic Reception in the Guildhal
