Maidenhead United fan petitions for 9 acres of Braywick Park

A new petition has been brought to RBWM by Shay Bottomley relating to the decision NOT to give 9 acres of Braywick Park to Maidenhead United football club, depriving the rest of the population of community space.

(For balance, a newer petition has been bought by Doug Watts to Save Braywick Park.)

On anaylsing the 800 word document, while the word rugby is used once, football is mentioned nine times, demonstrating the one sided nature of the argument put. The rugby club who currently makes use of the land which all residents have access to when it is not being used for rugby.

Watch Andrew hill address cabinet 10 minutes into the video. Planning law says leave it alone.

Maidenhead United already have planning permission to build the capacity needed. They just need to get the supporters to pay the money at the gate to fund their borrowing as other clubs / businesses have to do.

Why should RBWM residents pay to fund a commercial enterprise, especially when less than 1% of the population attend the games?

THE PETITION

MOVE US OR LOSE US

We the undersigned petition the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead to refer back to Cabinet, the decision of the 27th of July not to dispose the open space land at Braywick Park to Maidenhead United Football Club for the delivery of a new community stadium, AstroTurf pitches and athletics facility. When making this decision, the Cabinet only considered the adverse consequences of the loss of open space and did not fulfil its obligation to also consider the advantages of leasing the land to the football club, meaning it did not take a balanced view in its decision making.

Cabinet – Thursday 27 July 2023 7.00 pm

Disposal of Open Space Land, Land at Braywick Park, Maidenhead

That Cabinet consider the objections received in relation to the proposed disposal (by the grant of a lease) of land at Braywick Park, Maidenhead (“the Open Space”) following the statutory notification of the Council’s intention to dispose of the Open Space and having regard to the objections, confirm whether it agrees to the disposal of the Open Space.

AGREED UNANIMOUSLY: That Cabinet considered the objections received in relation to the proposed disposal (by the grant of a lease) of land at Braywick

Park, Maidenhead (“the Open Space”) following the statutory notification of the Council’s intention to dispose of the Open Space and having regard to the objections, confirmed that they did not agree to the disposal of the Open Space.

I wrote this after my last Overview & Scrutiny meeting to challenge the Conservative decision to give the football club 9 acres of community space for a peppercorn rent…

Thank you
