The Windsor Local History Group was initiated in 1976 when several WEA students and tutors formed the Windsor Local History Publications Group whose stated aim was to foster research in the field of local history and publish the results. Although the word ‘Publications’ was dropped from its title in 2004, members are still encouraged to develop specialisations in specific topics and continue to share knowledge and research through the production of books, articles, talks, social media posts and widely recognised popular annual journal, Windlesora.
Windsor is a location of extreme historical and archaeological interest. A geographic area occupied by human settlement since the Mesolithic era, it has been the seat of the monarchy since Norman times and is within a stone’s throw of other historically significant towns and villages including Old Windsor and Eton. Many Windsor residents have made important contributions to the wider area and the UK as well as internationally, and tourists come from all over the world to enjoy and learn more about the town.
