I was asked for some top tips on growing mint by one of our Gold Star winners. I asked the question on a few local Facebook Groups and got the following suggestions…
It likes semi shade. In my garden it is invasive so keep it in a pot.
Go for Mentha × piperita not spicata, grow it in a pot / planter to control the growth of the roots, keep soil fed and moist (not wet).
I planted mine in a pot and it’s dying will it just grow back
Grow it potted. If it gets loose in the garden it’s very invasive.
We have potted mint in our garden and on our allotment in Spittal. Grows fine.
As above. Put it in a pot which drains well in half sunshine.
Top tip – keep it in a pot.
It grows like a weed all round my compost heap!
If growing in the ground it’s good to mix compost/well rotted horse manure into the soil to give it richness and better drainage. In a place where it will get full sun. Mint spreads like made via the root system. So she should get a good sized plast… See more
It’s best to pot it up and make sure you have a slab or something solid underneath the pot, this stops the roots from going into the soil it’s very invasive…
Mint grows wild in my garden. I didn’t even plant it just grows
I grow huge clumps, lots of water, sun and in a pot
Grow in a box or another container it does take over once it gets going.
My only comment would be to grow it in a pot & not in the ground, it spreads so quickly! Keep cutting it to produce fresh shoots as it can get ‘leggy’!
Mine always dies and doesnt come back next year so i gave up with it
Gardener’s World called it “rambunctious” because it grows and spreads so readily even in poorest soils, so containers are a must and not to overfeed it.
It grows very well in a pot standing in a saucer and water well in a semi sunny position
We need to know what sort of problem she’s having. I grow mine in a pot. It dies back in the winter and grows back (from the roots) in the spring. I never need to do anything with it. I agree with the advice not to feed it
You have had sound advice. Do not grow mint in open spaces it will overwhelm and overtake spaces. Use boxes or planters.
If you grow it in a container use oblong or square. Mint roots are lateral and putting it in a round pot is like putting it in a straight jacket!
Thank you to everyone who took time to offer a suggestion 😉
