Come and Join the Maidenhead Boundary Walk
Every October, the town of Maidenhead comes alive with footsteps echoing many centuries of tradition. The Maidenhead Boundary Walk is a glowing example of community building and support. The walk is more than just a scenic stroll—it’s also a living tribute to local heritage, community spirit, and charitable action. The route winds through our town, Berkshire’s beautiful countryside, and wonderful riverside views
Rooted in the ancient custom of Beating the Bounds, the walk retraces the historic boundary of Maidenhead. Dating back to when Elizabeth I granted Maidenhead its first Charter on 7th March 1582, and more recently, the 1934 boundaries. It was a traditional ceremony to help townsfolk have a ‘true and better knowledge of the Borough’.
Today, the walk blends that legacy with modern purpose: raising funds for local charities, promoting health and wellbeing, and bringing together walkers of all ages and backgrounds. Whether you’re walking solo, with family, or as part of a club, it’s a chance to connect and contribute to the local Town.
The walk is organised by all three of the Rotary Clubs in Maidenhead and regularly involves over 50 charitable groups making the walk to obtain sponsorship for their causes. Last year, these groups raised more than twenty-two thousand pounds for their causes. With 100% of sponsorship funds going to their chosen charity

A Walk for Everyone
The traditional walk can be walked in part or in full. From Boulters Lock, it goes down the Thames past the Sounding Arch to Bray, where the Thames can be crossed via the services of the Sea Cadets boates or up and over the M4 river crossing. The southern leg takes walkers to the Shire Horse Public House. Crossing over the A4 to the Thicket, walkers traverse the Thicket and Darlings Lane to the Golden Ball. After which comes the northern part of the walk with views of Windsor Castle and Cliveden. The final leg takes walkers across Battlemead and down the towpath to Boulters Lock.
The shorter Family Friendly route loops from Boulters Lock down the Thames over Maidenhead Bridge to the Sounding Arch, then back home under Maidenhead Bridge via Riverside Park and the Jubilee River, over Taplow Bridge, and round Ray Mill Island.
