My grandmother use to tell me about her life as a child in Somerset and one thing she use to tell me was that her mother always made them set an extra place at the table just in case a tramp/traveller was passing and needed a meal.

In return the visiting gypsies would feed the children if they saw them out and about.

Baked hedgehog and nettle soup was always on the menu.
