We put out an appeal at the end of October looking for nominations for Windsor’s Top 3 Local Heroes as part of our BIG 30 Birthday celebrations.
We had some very strong entrants. There are many people helping Windsor residents in many ways but we had to make a decision.
And on this, our 30th birthday, there was one that shone through for the boss…

Sam Taylor
Sam is one of the most giving and kind people in Windsor. She is a lifeline for many community members – providing emotional support when needed, running around town to upcycle furniture to help vulnerable people create homes when they have nothing, co-creating beautiful gardens with the elderly so they have something they feel is theirs, and so much more.
Sam herself has volunteered with many of the groups in Windsor and always makes time and space for someone in need, all the while caring full time for her own mother. She is generous, gracious, and a real source of support.
Sam’s response at being chosen by the community for this prestigious, once in a lifetime award 😉
I am truly grateful to have been nominated for this. I love being involved with the community through the Community Planters, supporting others and at local events. I adore my job creating gardens for elderly residents and love watching people enjoy them. Through supporting my mum I am in Tesco quite a lot and would like to thank all the familiar staff we see every week . It makes such a difference to see friendly faces . Thank you.

It was hard to argue with this…
Mike Sells
I would like to nominate Mike Sells as a local hero. Mike has been a member of Windsor Lions club for over 25 and during that time he has taken on a multitude of activities that have benefited the community – from organising a Swimathon which has raise over £300,000, taking on a prominent role in Windsor Foodshare where he volunteers at least 2 days a week, to being the driving force behind the Windsor Community defibrillator project which has seen more than 25 publicly accessible Defibrillators around the town.
If ever a volunteer is needed both within our Lions club, or outside, Mike is always the first to put his name forward and he has overseen and mentored many new members of Windsor Lions club to help them reach their potential in the club.
Mike is always cheerful and ready to help and I can’t think of anyone more deserving of the title of Local Hero.
We’ve helped Mike join a few dots and he has been around for years. Makes me feel like a spring chicken 😉
Mike’s response to being chosen…
I am honoured to have been selected as one of Windsor Tesco’s Local Heroes.
Lions motto is “We Serve”. Thousands of members are based in hundreds of clubs throughout the British Isles and each club serves its local community. The justification for my nomination also applies to the members of Windsor Lions who all volunteer to help others.
Thank you, Tesco for my award.

And what can you say…
Chris Davies
I wish to nominate Chris Davies. He is extremely active in the local community. When he was President of Windsor St George Rotary Club he not only kept the club going during the pandemic but he also increased the club membership. Chris has helped at vaccination clinics, Thames Hospice events, Windsor Horse Show, Windsor Half Marathon, Parallel Windsor etc. Chris helps to organise the Windsor St George Team for both the Windsor and Eton lights switch on and also the Reindeer event. He was very prominent in organizing activities for both the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and the King’s Coronation festivities.
Chris has also helped to organize Windsor’s first Repair Cafe.
Chris does all of these things not for political gain or to win votes but for a genuine desire to help the community and that is why I have nominated him for this award.
Nice work Chris. Could you teach Mike how to smile for photos 😉
Chris’ feelings on being one of life’s winners…
I feel very honoured, surprised and flattered to have been nominated for the Local Heroes Award, especially when there are so many other “Local Heroes” doing amazing work in the community. One of Winston Churchill’s famous quotes says “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” This something I strongly believe. I would like to thank Tesco for this award and congratulate Tesco Dedworth on their 30th Anniversary. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Tesco for the way they support the local good causes.

Thank you everyone who participated… now we need some Christmas pics for our windows like last year 😉
Thank you.
Jon Davey
Community Champion
Tesco Dedworth

So sadly 30 years ago today I became someone who shopped for convenience. With the benefit of hindsight I truly regret that as the vegetable shop and butchers in ruddles way had to close down. I really should of supported my local community
Thank you Tesco
