We host Volunteer Meetings on the first Friday of the month, 10:50am – 12:30pm, at Tesco Dedworth for customers who would like to know more about volunteering. We also facilitate joining in ad hoc events without having to commit to a specific organisation.
Morning all,
Yesterday was our 2nd Volunteers meeting and an attendee turned up for the 2nd time, so I asked him about his experience of the two meetings and he produced these very eloquent words…
Being recently retired, I have been looking for opportunities as a volunteer to put something back into the community. However I had been rather put-off by the approach from some of the larger charities, who asked me to complete an “application form” and they would then let me know if they had anything suitable for my skills. I was reluctant to give out personal details before I knew what the volunteering activity involved.
The Tesco Volunteers meeting promised to give an insight into activities without the prior commitment – and so it proved! At the first meeting I learned from volunteers, rather than “recruitment officers”, what working at various organisations entailed. As a result, I warmed to a few roles that I felt suited me and set off to find out more.
I joined the second meeting as I had follow-up questions about one of the volunteering roles and was keen to hear of other activities where I might be of assistance. I particularly like the informality of the Tesco sessions “come along if you can, but if not, hope to see you next month”.
