6th Windsor Brownies Educational Tour of Tesco Dedworth

Earlier this year we were approached by 6th Windsor Brownies and asked if we could put on a tour of Tesco Dedworth that would enable the Brownies to see behind the scenes at Tesco, gain some understanding of retail distribution, have a better appreciation of the value of money and help them towards the attainment of relevant badges.

We only had an hour and needed to ensure it was fun learning… an interesting challenge. I discussed the idea with colleagues and asked a couple to help me with the tour.

Rekha helped with the food sampling which went down a treat. We had a map of the world showing where different foods came from and the Brownies sampled a number of different fruits. They were also given a sweet potato to take home and enjoy with their Sunday dinner 😉

Cein took the Brownies on a tour of the warehouse which they particularly enjoyed as it is behind the scenes, not many customers get to see the inner sanctum and some never return, getting lost in the corner of a giant freezer!

Each Brownie had some money they wanted to spend on items for Windsor Foodshare. We started by selecting some products (main pic) and explaining their money would go further by buying items on the bottom shelf.

We then opened up a till and talked them through the process. They took a few blue tokens, placed the food they’d bought in the Foodshare drop off point, put the tokens in the slots and then learned all about “Stronger Starts”, the purpose of the blue tokens.

We all then headed upstairs for some final questions before the Brownies were delivered safely back to their parents… well, we’ve not had any reports of missing Brownies 😉

Great fun and learning had by all. Thank you Brown Owl for inspiring this educational tour we can now role out for others to enjoy.

Thank you.
