Rotary Youth Speaks Debate Jafar Hall, Eton College 2022

Windsor schools took part in Windsor & Eton Rotary Club’s debating competition at Eton College on Thursday 7th April.

The club adopted a unique approach due to the challenges of the last couple of years. We wanted to give Windsor’s young people the chance to debate at Eton’s purpose built debating chamber even though the national competition wasn’t taking place this year.

Rather than our usual judges, three young people judged proceedings. Fiona Winters, a past competitor for Trevelyan and RBWM Youth Councillors Isla Gilmour and Joshua Askew, offered words of encouragement and guidance ably assisted by the Head Teacher of The Green Room, Richard Allen.

Trevelyan Middle School got things underway with Ellie Chandler talking for the idea that “Animal Testing Should be Banned”. Ozzy Urso-Baiarda presented the argument against the ban chaired by Noor Ouchikh.

Windsor Girls School debated “Should Reparations be Paid to Victims of Slavery”. Chaired by Cherry, Nicole opposed and Kiya spoke for.

Windsor Boys School went for “Is the Royal Family Past Their Sell by Date?” George chaired, Albert spoke for and Charlie Kingsford opposed the idea.

The evening was concluded by Trevelyan Middle School debating “Violent Video Games”. Adrian opposed, Sam was for and Sakina ably chaired the debate.

Thank you to all the teachers for coaching the students, parents for their support, Rotarians for helping on the night and Eton College for lending us such a great venue for the debate.
