Windsor Horse Rangers is a volunteer run charity which aims to educate children about all aspects of horse care and riding. For 50 weekends of the year 180 children aged between 8 and 18 take part over four sessions lasting 3-4 hours. We have over 700 children on our waiting list. The children who attend are taught practical skills and theory from a syllabus which gets more in depth as they progress through Rangers. They learn how to catch, groom and tack up and how to ride. They learn to muck out, tie up hay nets, sweep the yard, poo pick and every aspect of how to look after a horse. They work towards achievement badges and are given ranks and promotions to give them more responsibility as they prove themselves. In addition to learning about riding and horse care, rangers learn teamwork, leadership, respect for people and animals, and many other important life skills.
What one of our volunteers looks like…
We run from 8:30am to 1pm for the 10-18 year olds and 1:30-4:30 for the 8-10 year olds. The adults supervise, teach and guide the children, adults also take the riding lessons and theory lessons. It is important to note that the children do all the jobs and the adults are there to help them, not do the jobs themselves. You don’t have to be horsey but it is a bonus if you are. It is important that you like both horses AND children!
If you are interested in volunteering then please get in touch via email and arrange to visit us. After an initial look around you can help for a full session and we can take it from there. We run on a rota system so you don’t have to help every week. If you start volunteering regularly we will carry out a DBS check.
