Wild Windsor

Wild Windsor is a group of local volunteers who share a passionate regard for the town’s natural environment. Regular activities are undertaken to help restore, expand and protect habitats and support biodiversity in open spaces, gardens, blue infrastructure and interconnected areas across the Borough. Wild Windsor is one of the six ‘Wild’ voluntary groups working collaboratively with RBWM as well as local and regional organisations to reach these goals. 

Following the Council’s declaration of the Climate Emergency in June 2019, several public workshops brought together interested residents and professionals working on climate change issues to support the development of RBWM’s Environment & Climate Strategy (2020). Wild Windsor was formed in this period to join the work of the existing ‘Wilds’, including contributing to the RBWM Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) which informs the planning for many of our projects. 

Activities

Working with individual volunteers, schools, families, local businesses, churches and community groups, ‘Wild’ groups, RBWM River Rangers, Windsor Cycle Hub, Good Gym and others, our aim is to inspire and encourage everyone to engage with the natural environment, biodiversity and positive impacts they have on human health, well-being – physical, emotional, mental and spiritual – and climate sustainability. 

Supported by RBWM’s Natural Environment Team, we organise activities such as planting trees and hedgerows to provide food and nesting areas for a variety of birds and animals; building log piles to develop healthy soil and shelter for small creatures and insects; pond maintenance; installing bird and bat boxes; as well as surveying wildlife and monitoring a range of habitats – all of which help biodiversity to survive and thrive.
