Winter Solstice 2024

I Love Windsor are hosting an invite only event for our Community Champions at Pug Yard in Windsor Castle today to celebrate all our efforts throughout the year 🙂

What is the Winter Solstice?

The Winter Solstice is an astronomical event that occurs when the Earth’s axial tilt is at its maximum angle away from the Sun. It marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year for the hemisphere experiencing winter.

Key Facts:

  • Date:
    • In the Northern Hemisphere, it typically occurs around December 21 or 22.
    • In the Southern Hemisphere, it occurs around June 20 or 21.
  • Astronomical Significance:
    • The Sun appears at its lowest point in the sky at noon.
    • The Sun is directly overhead at the Tropic of Capricorn (23.5°S latitude) during the December solstice.

Cultural and Spiritual Significance:

  • The Winter Solstice has been celebrated for thousands of years across cultures as a symbol of renewal and the return of light.
  • Ancient monuments like Stonehenge in England and Newgrange in Ireland are aligned with the solstice.
  • Celebrations tied to the solstice include:
    • Yule in Pagan traditions.
    • Dongzhi Festival in East Asia.
    • Elements of Christmas and other winter festivals.

Natural Changes:

  • After the solstice, days gradually begin to lengthen, and nights shorten, leading to the eventual arrival of spring.

The Winter Solstice symbolizes hope, reflection, and the cyclical nature of life, as it marks the turning point toward brighter and longer days.

Thank you.
