Your thoughts on my meeting next week with an RBWM Director to discuss Alexandra Gardens

This time last year 350 people agreed with me that Alexandra Gardens should be given back to the people. Next week I have a meeting with the lead officer for the gardens and so I wondered if residents still support this change of direction.

I’ll have an hour so we’ll not be able to get into the details but just create the big picture. Let’s start by reminding ourselves of the petition and then identify what is important.

Give Alexandra Gardens back to the People

We the undersigned petition the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead to discontinue long term contracts for the eastern half of Alexandra Gardens preventing public access to the lawns.

Mental health is a massive issue in 2025 with social media demanding our attention every 5 seconds. Residents need Alexandra Gardens back for the people of Windsor to get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy some mindfulness.

Random weekend usage for big events that pay a full licence fee, or no fee if a community event, is great but 3 month contracts to any single contractor, allowing them to dominate the public space to the eastern half of Alexandra Gardens should be discouraged and discontinued.

Give Alexandra Gardens back to the People

Essentially permission has been given for some form of entertainment to destroy the lawns up until January 2028 under 25/01838/FULL

My meeting on Monday with the lead member will be to explore how further permissions can be halted. Some provision made for the ice rink but all the tacky rides and multiple sound systems silenced.

A programme of reinstating the gardens back to their former glory initiated.

Sir Francis Tress Barry gifted the land for Alexandra Gardens to Windsor Council to serve as a public park and recreational space, specifically to commemorate the 1902 coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. He paid for the land to ensure a healthy, open space for local people to enjoy by the Thames.

We need the gardens to be managed by some form of legal entity, made up of local community groups, led by Windsor & Eton Society, with the aim of creating a garden that is fit for purpose.

Residents need to be able to find peace and relaxation, away from the day to day stresses. The gardens need to be laid out to encourage visitors to stroll through it, admiring the flora and fauna. Which enables bees and butterflies to flourish, encouraging biodiversity in all its forms.

It could be used to educate our young people in the art of self sufficiency. Teach them how to grow their own food, show them how nature works, how to live more in the present than online.

Please comment below or visit the poll we have created on Facebook and share your thoughts.

Thank you.
