Windsor Lions Supporting the Local Community
Local Community support group and registered charity, –Windsor Lions with a motto ‘We Serve’ maintained their profile as a Local Community Services organisation by getting involved or organising a number of events this Spring.
The season kicked off in mid-March with their very popular – and appropriately named – ‘Spring Tea Party. This saw over 70 of the area’s older folk coming together at Old Windsor Memorial Hall to enjoy a cream tea, free raffle and musical entertainment from the Royal Holloway Brass Band. Everyone went away happy, armed with a bag of goodies courtesy of the Lions.
The Early May Bank Holiday saw the club partnering with Rotary and St Michael’s school Parent Teacher Association to stage the Annual Wheelbarrow Race in Sunninghill. 18 teams entered into the fun – all dressing up in wonderfully imaginative costumes – as the date was May 4th, many Star Wars themes were on show! In all a total of over £7,500 was raised for the Ascot Day Centre.
Following close on its heals was the Riding for the Disabled Fancy Dress Competition – a part of the Royal Windsor Horse Show held within the grounds of Windsor Castle. Windsor Lions have long organised and sponsored this event and this year saw 6 teams enter both horses and riders wonderfully dressed in a variety of costumes on the theme of ‘Space’. The competition was judged by Dr Who and Strictly star Alex Kingston who awarded the first prize to RDA Penniwells Riding Club.
Windsor Lions once again distributed Marie Curie daffodil collection boxes throughout many outlets throughout the area during the Spring period which raised £2,300.
