3 minutes to Save Alexandra Gardens

I’ve been granted 3 minutes to speak at the Windsor and Ascot Development Management Committee meeting on 3rd April, so would appreciate your help in getting the number of signatures over 300… I’ll obviously be speaking against the application … Thank you.

On the agenda, at the same time as the wheel, is an application for over 300 homes at the back of Alma Road Police Station. They will be 7-8 stories high if granted, seems a tad high but I’ll leave local Cllrs to argue the Tall Building SPD on that one. That’s potentially an additional 1,000 residents needing a peaceful park.

The 40 tons of metal Ferris Wheel is 35m tall, that’s the equivalent of 10-12 stories according to Google. I feel their attention to detail in the application is distinctly lacking and yet the officers are inclined to permit it! Go and review the papers for yourself.

My main bug bear is why RBWM officers, or in this case local Councillors will decide, are even contemplating being willing to give over what should and could be beautiful gardens, like Valley Gardens in Harrogate, to commercial interests for 9 months of the year for a peppercorn rent.

This application is just for the Ferris Wheel over the summer but the winter application will follow, looking to construct multiple 40 ton pieces of fairground equipment blasting music, flashing lights, taking over twice the space they used to, disturbing what should be a tranquil space there for the benefit of residents’ mental health.

Happy for there to be entertainment in Alexandra Gardens but it needs to vary itself so local residents engage and not be the same old for months on end.

I get the Ice Rink is fun at Christmas but as for the rest of it!

Tourists would come and see the gardens, as well as the Castle, if they were worth visiting and maintained to a high standard befitting Windsor.

In my 3 minutes I’ll be covering the themes I have already covered in my posts about giving Alexandra Gardens back to the people… here are the headlines…

Give Alexandra Gardens Back to the People

  • Administration – a rushed, inaccurate application
  • RBWM’s Corporate Plan – all the right words…
  • Planning Law
  • Biodiversity – a token gesture
  • Financial Fairness – a bad deal for residents
  • Mental Health – the real impact
  • Public Opinion
  • And more…

I’d appreciate your support and if you haven’t signed already, please do…

  1. Thanks for this and the updates are appreciated.
Alexandra Gardens is the WRONG place for this activity, the gardens take many months to recover and total mess in between.
Move the Wheel and Ice Rink to another location to minimise the disruption.
Keep up the good work on this subject
