Councillor Calls for a Respectful Election Campaign in May 2023

When I was a young trainee sales representative for Nestle back in the 80’s, one of the mantras taught was “Never knock the competition”. It puts you in a negative light… A more positive approach is to say what is great about your product, how it solves problems the competition’s product can’t, without mentioning them 😉 It is a much better energy.

All around us the electioneering is beginning and there is already a certain amount of negativity.

The reason many people don’t stand for election is all this negativity. People who would make ideal councillors but who find the negative energy too much to handle and so don’t put their hats in the ring.

I’d like to see more of these people involved in local politics and would prefer a more positive, encouraging, light giving experience.

On Tuesday night at Full Council I am bringing a motion which I hope is voted through unanimously by Councillors. I asked Cllr Gerry Clark to 2nd my motion because as Chair of Corporate Overview & Scrutiny Panel he has shown himself to be a very fair, capable chair, only interested in what is best for the council as a whole, pushing aside party politics. Many struggle to be so balanced… I felt drawn to ask him to support my motion, which is…

That all existing Councillors will treat all political candidates with respect during the May 2023 elections and will encourage any prospective party candidates to follow their lead and sign up to running clean, respectful campaigns in May 2023.

Come and witness how your local Cllrs vote on the motion.

I’d ask you to join us for the Full Council meeting on Tuesday evening, starting at 7pm… I’d estimate that we’ll get to the motions around 9pm as there is little on the agenda.

Less mud slinging, more respect during the May 2023 elections please.

Thank you.
