Assisting Berkshire Children to read (ABC to read) recruits, trains, and supports community volunteers to provide one-to-one mentoring of primary school children (ages 5 to 11) throughout Berkshire who are struggling to read. Every year the hundreds of pupils we work with discover the pleasure of reading and gain a crucial skill for at school and beyond. ABC to read specifically assist children not entitled to individual help through statutory funding, with a focus on children from disadvantaged backgrounds and schools in deprived areas.

Volunteers / Supporters
Each trained reading mentor supports a number of children (usually 3) to ensure a worthwhile trip and a reasonable total amount of time in school, most support twice a week. This gives systematic support and helps build a strong relationship, helping each child individually and usually for a year to allow us to make a lasting difference. The support is given outside of the classroom using materials and resources that feel different from the classroom resources

ABC to read provide local schools with local volunteers. If you are looking for a rewarding way of adding more to your community do look at our website. As Fieldworker for twenty years with ABC to read I know that our volunteers make a positive difference to windsor.
