Thames Hospice Clothes Bins Removed from Sutherland Grange
When I drove past Sutherland Grange the other morning I noticed the Thames Hospice bins were missing… then yesterday, their removal was being celebrated as a LibDem success on Facebook!
This brought back memories of an early, long drawn out battle as a new Cllr.
I had won the ward seat that included the recycling bins at Sutherland Grange. The previous Tory Cllr still had influence and with the help of a friend, stopped the trial removal of the recycling bins, preferring the place looking a complete tip.
I spoke with officers and it was agreed that if we ran a survey and it said that local residents wanted them removed, then they would be… a solution…
In a recent survey conducted by RBWM over 200 people responded overwhelmingly saying they are happy for Sutherland Grange Recycling bins to be removed on a trial basis.
- 71% happy for trial removal
- 61% of respondents don’t use the site
- 18% used if for disposing of clothes – the most popular use
- 10% claim they use it as don’t have enough recycling bins at home
Back then, I also spoke with the chap responsible for the Hospice clothes donation bins and he agreed to pick up the fly tipping, within reason, if he could have an extra bin…
All 3 bins have been providing revenue to Thames Hospice for years!

As far as I’m aware, in recent years there has been no real issue with fly tipping… if there had, it would have been all over Facebook. This action will cause a loss of income for Thames Hospice as well as removing a true recycling service for the local neighbourhood… seems a shame and feels like a backward step.
I’m unclear as to the real reasons behind this, I’ll see what I can find out…
